                                <title><![CDATA[ Viva la Gaia - a new online store with circular economy concept products]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The results of the development in upgrading whey within the LIFE for Acid Whey and LAKTIKA project are being implemented within the new <a href="https://vivalagaia.com/" target="_blank">Viva la Gaia</a> brand.</p><br /><p>We invite you to our new Viva la Gaia online store. For a start, we introduced the personal care product collection "<a href="https://vivalagaia.com/product-category/my-whey/" target="_blank">My Whey</a>", based on fermented whey.                                 <title><![CDATA[For achievements within the development projects LIFE for Acid Whey and LAKTIKA, we received five awards for inventions in the field of the circular economy for 2022.]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The Slovenian Strategic Development and Innovation Partnership - Networks for the Transition to a Circular Economy (SRIP - Circular Economy) in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development, on March 8, 2023, at the MEGRA fair in Gornja Radgona awarded the first Slovenian awards for inventions in the field of the circular economy for 2022.</p><br /><p>Partners in the project LIFE for Acid Whey and LAKTIKA received the following awards in the field of whey processing:</p><p>SILVER AWARD: The team of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Biotechnology and Faculty of Pharmacy consisting of: Diana Paveljšek, Timeja Planinšek Parfant, Nika Osel, Robert Roškar, Bojana Bogovič Matijašić for the invention Using acid whey as a by-product of the dairy industry for the production of vitamin B12.</p><p>BRONZE AWARD: University of Ljubljana team, Faculty of Pharmacy, composed of Mirjana Gašperlin, Maja Bjelošević Žiberna, Mirjam Gosenca Matjaž, Blaž Grilc for the invention Cosmetology and the use of whey: contribution to the circular economy.</p><p>BRONZE AWARD: The ARHEL d.o.o. team, composed of: Maja Zupančič Justin, Maja Čič, Tinkara Rozina, Tinkara Vardjan, Tjaša Prevc, for the invention Process of obtaining stabilized and microbiologically inactivated products obtained by growing kefir grains in whey.</p><p>BRONZE AWARD: ARHEL d.o.o. team, composed of Maja Zupančič Justin, Maja Čič, and Tinkara Rozina, for the invention of the process of making a sprinkler to accelerate the fermentation processes of organic waste.</p><p>A SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD for the contribution to the field of development activities in the circular economy for 2022 was received by the ARHEL d.o.o. team in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Maribor, composed of Maja Zupančič Justin, Marko Kete, Maja Čič, Tinkara Vardjan, Irena Petrinić, Hermina Bukšek.</p><p>You can read more about the organization of the competition on the SRIP pages.</p><p>We are pleased about the achievements, which are a sign of committed work on development projects!</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[44th International Dairy Experts Symposium]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>At the Symposium in Rovinj (12 - 15 October 2022) we presented the results of growing kefir grains in acid (fermented) whey.</p><br /><p>At the following <a href="/uploads/WDhy1dtk/Poster_OPTIMIZATIONOFKEFIRGRAINSCULTIVATIONSINWHEY.pdf" target="_blank" download="">link</a>, you can download the poster presenting the results of growing kefir grains in acid and sweet whey. </p><p>We presented the results at the <a href="https://www.hmu.hr/obavijesti" target="_blank">44th International Symposium of Dairy Experts</a>.</p><p>We are proud of our girls who won the first prize for the presented poster.</p><p><br></p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Another presentation of LAKTIKA and LIFE for ACid Whey project]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>This time we presented development projects in the field of whey at the CEFood 2022 conference.</p><br /><p>Diana Paveljšek presented the contents of the LAKTIKA and LIFE for Acid Whey projects at the <a href="https://cefood2022.si/" target="_blank">11th Central European Congress on Food and Nutrition</a> with the subtitle "Food, technology and nutrition for healthy people in a healthy environment".</p><p><br></p><p>The presentation can be downloaded from the following <a href="/uploads/qNkOpNr4/00CEFood2022_DianaPaveljek.pdf" target="_blank" download="">link</a>.<br></p><p><br></p><p>In both projects, several possibilities for the reuse of whey in high-value-added products were demonstrated. For example, whey has been successfully used to produce probiotic biomass and metabolites such as nisin, vitamin B12, or kefir grains. A pharmaceutical formulation with enteric-coated pellets containing lactoferrin has been developed. Separation of IgG and LPO by cation chromatography using monolith columns was first optimised in the laboratory and later on a pilot scale, while α-lactalbumin was isolated from the remaining fraction by selective precipitation. The use of the protein-rich fractions as food or feed supplements and the production of the starter for organic waste treatment were also tested. Whey fractions were successfully incorporated into cosmetic products. Finally, cascade approaches of the whey treatment were proposed in order to obtain high-added value products and to approach as much as possible the goal of zero waste. The results obtained form the basis for further development of new functional foods and dietary supplements based on whey.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Presentation at the ISSS 2022 Symposium ]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The results of the LIFE for Acid Whey project in the field of preparative and analytical immunoglobulin G chromatography were presented at the <a href="https://isss2020.si/" target="_blank">26th International Symposium on Separation Sciences & 26th International Symposium for High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography</a>.</p><p><br></p><br />Jernej Oberčkal presented a poster with the title "<a href="/uploads/Ka7G23w7/IgGchromatographywithproteinGmonolithsOberckalJISSS2022.pdf" target="_blank" download="">Preparative and Analytical Chromatography of Immunoglobulin G from Whey Using Monolithic Protein G Affinity Columns and Stabilization of the isolates</a>". <br>The poster presents the results of the successful isolation of very pure IgG from two types of whey with the CIMmultus™-r protein G-1chromatographic Column.  The addition of mannitol and sucrose or only acetate buffer protected milk IgG from aggregation, which is needed in preparing a formulation with active IgG.]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Promotion of LACTOPRO starter ued in fermentation of biological waste ]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>As part of the promotion of the new LACTOPRO product, we distributed 300 free products.</p><br /><p>In the week between 31 May and 4 June 2021, Arhel promoted a new LACTOPRO product. The promotion of the product took place in the <a href="https://www.vrtnicenter.si/" target="_blank">Gašperlin Garden Center</a>, where we presented a new product to all enthusiasts for gardening, healthy vegetable production and separate collection of organic waste. The LACTOPRO starter, developed as part of the LIFE for acid Whey project, is primarily intended for the so-called Bokashi technique of composting organic waste from the household.                                 <title><![CDATA[We were pleased to be invited and participate in a webinar entitled “How to finance the greening of your food chain” organised by SMEunited in collaboration with the EU LIFE Programme]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://www.smeunited.eu/about-us" target="_blank">SMEunited</a> is the association of crafts and SMEs in Europe with member organisations from over 30 European countries. SMEunited acts on behalf of crafts and SMEs in the European Social Dialogue and in discussions with the EU institutions. As a result of the collaboration with the EU LIFE Programme, SMEunited presented the leaflet “Green Perspectives in Food Production” in a webinar, which took place on March 24, 2021. As a tool, the leaflet’s objective is to provide inspiration and guidance to SMEs in the food sector on sustainable business in a simple way</p><br /><p>The webinar gave us an opportunity to tell our story on developing greener products from acid whey for waste reduction, with the EU LIFE Programme's support.                                 <title><![CDATA[Presentation of results of the use of acid whey as a medium for the growth of probiotics and lactic acid bacteria at the conference BM2021 ]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The new results of the work on the LIFE for Acid Whey project were presented at the <a href="https://www.beneficialmicrobes2021.org/index.php" target="_blank">8th Beneficial Microbes Conference</a>, which took place as a virtual event between 22 and 24 March 2021. The purpose of the BM2021 conference is to present innovations in the production and use of pre- and probiotics in human and animal health.</p><br /><p>At the conference, we presented a poster entitled "Acid whey as a growth medium for probiotics and lactic acid bacteria". In the poster, we presented the results of our research showing that acid whey can also be a suitable growth medium for the cultivation of probiotics and lactic acid bacteria and the production of their metabolites such as nisin and vitamin B12. With this, we have shown a new possibility of further use of acid whey, which can reduce the waste generation in the dairy industry.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Presentation of the results of nisin production at the FEMS web conference]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The results of the cultivation of lactococci, lactic acid bacteria that produce the antibiotic nisin in the residual acid whey, were also presented at the international conference of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies.</p><br /><p>The FEMS (Federation of European Microbiological Societies) <a target="_blank">web conference</a> in cooperation with the Serbian Society for Microbiology took place between 28 and 31 October 2020.<br><br>You can download a poster presented at the conference entitled "Nisin production in acid whey with Lactococcus strains".<br><br>In laboratory and pilot tests, researchers at the Institute of Dairy Science and Probiotics demonstrated successful growth of lactococci and nisin production, confirming the possibility of alternative use of acid whey to obtain new products with high added value.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Presentation at the annual conference Food, Nutrition, Health]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The development projects on advanced possibilities of whey treatment and reuse, LIFE for Acid Whey and LAKTIKA, were presented as part of the annual conference "Food, nutrition, health", which took place this year under the slogan of World Food Day 2020 "Grow, feed, preserve".</p><br /><p>The event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, the European Center for Peace and Development, the European Food Technology Network and GRM Novo mesto - Center for Biotechnology and Tourism.                                 <description><![CDATA[<p>We gladly responded to the invitation and presented the LIFE for Acid Whey project at the event “Climate-neutral food and wood: Showcasing best climate practices in agriculture, forestry, food systems and the bioeconomy”.</p><br /><p>The <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/easme/en/climate-neutral-food-and-wood-showcasing-best-climate-practices-agriculture-forestry-food-systems" target="_blank">event</a>, organized by EASME, took place between 6 and 9 October 2020.                                 <title><![CDATA[The results of the project were presented at the Congress of the Slovenian Microbiological Society]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>At the virtual congress, which took place between 23 and 25 September 2020, we presented the pilot results of nisin production in residual acid whey after whey protein removal.</p><br /><p> At the virtual Congress of the S<a target="_blank">lovenian Microbiological Society</a>, we presented the results of pilot studies of nisin production and two methods of its isolation. Nisin was obtained by culturing lactococci in a residual acid whey from which whey proteins were partially removed. Nisin is a bacteriocin produced by lactococci and due to its stability and broad antimicrobial activity it is a natural preservative used in the food industry.<br><br>Poster title: Production of nisin in protein depleted acid whey and comparison of two isolation methods by HPLC.</p>]]></description>

                                <description><![CDATA[<p>We have published the results of initial pilot research within the LIFE for Acid Whey project in the field of characterization of lactoferrin - a whey protein isolated from acid whey.</p><br /><p>The aim of this study was to characterize the properties of lactoferrin (LF) obtained in a process developed for its isolation from acid whey derived from the production of fresh curd cheese, using a unique technology of ion-exchange chromatography on CIM® monolithic columns. The freeze-dried lactoferrin samples produced on the pilot plant (capacity 1 m3) were examined for the purity, iron-binding capacity, antibacterial activity, and pH- and temperature-stability. Apo-LF inhibited several tested strains (enterobacteria, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus salivarius) except clostridia, lactic acid bacteria, and bifidobacteria. Sample of LF intentionally saturated with Fe3+ lost its antibacterial activity, indicating the involvement of mechanisms based on depriving bacteria of an iron source. All samples, regardless of the iron-saturation level, exhibited stability in pH range 4.0 to 11.0. LF with higher iron content (A-value = 41.9%) showed better thermal stability. Heat treatment up to 72 °C/3 s did not reduce antimicrobial activity against E. coli O157: H7 tox-. Higher purity (above 91%), higher iron-binding capacity and higher inhibitory activity against E. coli O157: H7 tox- compared to some similar products from the market was observed. These results demonstrate a high potential of monolithic ion-exchange chromatography for industrial processing of acid whey as a source of LF that can be used in new products with high-added value.                                 <title><![CDATA[We attended the 11. NIZO Dairy Conference - Milk Protein Functionality]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The results of the LIFE for Acid Whey project were presented at the <a href="http://www.nizodairyconference.com/" target="_blank">11th NIZO Dairy Conference</a>, which took place between 8th&nbsp; and 11th October 2019 in Pependal, the Netherlands.&nbsp;</p><p>We presented our results as part of the latest scientific fi<a href="/uploads/E371axSE/QuantificationofLFandLPOindifferenttypesofwheyOberckalNIZO2019.pdf" target="_blank" download=""></a>ndings on the functionality of proteins in milk and whey.</p><br /><p>The results were presented with two posters entitled: <a href="/uploads/1aVCbAiv/CharacterisationandassessmentofbiologicalactivityofLFPosterBBMNIZO2019.pdf" target="_blank" download="">Characterization and assessment of biological activity of lactoferrin isolated from acid whey using monolithic ion-exchange chromatography</a><br>and <a href="/uploads/E371axSE/QuantificationofLFandLPOindifferenttypesofwheyOberckalNIZO2019.pdf" target="_blank" download="">Quantification of lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase in different types of whey</a>.<br><br>The research results demonstrate high quality and biological activity of the lactoferrin obtained during the test production phase and thus the high potential of the ion-exchange monolithic chromatographic columns used for protein isolation from whey. Acid whey has proven to be a promising medium for the isolation of lactoferrin, while sweet whey seems to have higher potential for the isolation of enzymatically active lactoperoxidase.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[The lactoferrin purchased online may only be a pink powder]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>The quality of lactoferrin we ordered from the largest online stores turned out to be inadequate.</p><br /><p>The demand for lactoferrin, a whey protein with many physiological functions, is increasing. The demand is followed by an increase in supply, especially in online stores. The lactoferrin produced during the test production at Arhel was compared to the Sigma standard and two products purchased from one of the largest online stores. An analysis performed using IE-HPLC (high-resolution ion-exchange liquid chromatography) showed that lactoferrin was only present in a minimal fraction of less than 2% in the purchased samples.<br>Due to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anticancer and other properties, lactoferrin is being used in the food and cosmetics industries (i.e. food supplements, milk formulas, oral care products) as well as in clinical diagnostics and human and veterinary medicines. In cow's milk, the concentration of lactoferrin is only about 150 mg/L, and its production is a high-tech process. Therefore, before purchasing and using the low-cost product accessible from online stores for your use, it is necessary to make sure of its quality.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Arhel`s lactoferrin proved to have one of the highest antimicrobial activity]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>Institute of dairy science & probiotics tested the antimicrobial activity of lactoferrin produced by ARHEL in comparison with three commercial products on the market.</p><br /><p>Antimicrobial activity of lactoferrin samples obtained on a pilot plant at Arhel (10 samples) or purchased (3 producers) against Escherichia coli O157: H8 tox-  was tested by microdilution method. The growth was followed by measuring the optical density at λ = 630 nm after 6-hour incubation at 37 °C. The figure shows inhibition of the growth of indicator bacteria due to the presence of lactoferrin, proportional to its increasing concentration. The inhibitory effect, which can also be expressed as MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration), was more pronounced in the samples of the Arhel than in three samples of other manufacturers, suggesting a higher biological (antimicrobial) activity of lactoferrin produced on Arhel. The MIC breakpoint was set at OD630 = 0.1, which means that the MIC is the lowest concentration sufficient to reduce the growth below OD630.</p>]]></description>

                                <description><![CDATA[<p>In May 2019, we attended the Vitafoods Europe fair in Geneva to learn about food supplements, nutraceuticals, new technological processes and formulations. We were particularly interested in whey protein and probiotic products. Their use has been increasing lately. They are becoming an important component of sports diets, enriched and hypoallergenic infant formulas, dietary diets for the elderly population and, among other things, natural remedies for protection against type 2 diabetes, alleviating insomnia, strengthening immunity.</p>]]></description>

                                <description><![CDATA[<p>Pogoj je zaključen doktorat s področja kemije, biokemije, živilstva, biotehnologije ali sorodnih smeri.</p><br /><p>Na Inštitutu za mlekarstvo in probiotike, Oddelku za zootehniko, Biotehniški fakulteti, Univerzi v Ljubljani iščemo raziskovalca za delo na projektu Reuse of waste acid whey for extraction of high added value bioactive proteins v okviru programa LIFE 2016 (koordinator Arhel projektiranje in inženiring d.o.o.), za čas trajanja projekta (do 30.6.2021).  Delo na projektu bo vključevalo razvoj analitskih metod za beljakovine v različnih  živilskih matriksih, predvsem tistih povezanih z mlekom (sirotka, mlečne frakcije,..), izolacije laktata in laktoze in optimizacijo sušenja in mikrokapsulacije.                                 <title><![CDATA[Networking within the LIFE for ACid Whey project]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>Networking with existing and completed projects with related content is an important activity of the LIFE for Acid Whey project.</p><br /><p>One of the activities that we will pay attention to is networking with ongoing and completed LIFE projects. On the website, we have presented a set of active and completed LIFE projects and other projects co-financed by European funds, which are thematically related to our developmental field and technology. The presentation can be found under the "ABOUT THE PROJECT" tab. Related projects address various ways of rational water use in dairy industry, multiple possibilities of treating whey to reduce environmental footprint (wastewater treatment technology), its use as a medium for the production of other useful raw materials and the extraction of individual whey components.<br><br>We hope to exchange information as well as new research and development initiatives that can arise through networking. Other organisations and their projects are also invited to participate in the joint presentation.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Lactoferrin obtained in the framework of the LIFE for Acid Whey project exhibits the highest level of iron binding capacity]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>In Arhel, we are very proud of the excellent results of lactoferrin activity obtained from whey within the LIFE for Acid Whey project. In comparing the analysis with other commercially available lactoferrins and the standard, our lactoferrin exhibits the highest iron binding capacity or very low saturation with iron.</p><br /><p>Lactoferrin is a protein represented in high concentrations in breast milk and is formed and excreted by other cells of our body. Among other beneficial properties, lactoferrin plays an extremely important role in the immune defence of our body. In this case, its high iron binding capacity is of utmost importance. By locally binding the iron, it prevents bacteria binding to the surface of the tissues and thus their proliferation. <br><br>In spite the fact that iron is an extremely important mineral for our body, free iron acts as a catalyst in the formation of hydroxyl radicals, which are among the most active free radicals. By binding free iron, lactoferrin prevents the formation of free radicals. Regardless of the amount of lactoferrin saturation with iron, lactoferrin has an important regulatory role in the transport of iron into cells, the transfer of iron between the cellular organelles and the elimination of excesses iron from cells.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Using monolithic chromatographic columns, we achieve high purity and efficiency of lactoferrin extraction and sequential separation of other whey proteins]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>After coagulation of casein and albumin from milk in standard methods of curd production, whey remains, in which a small amount of so-called <br>whey proteins is still present. Many of them, such as lactoferrin, are important physiologically active substances. Using monolithic <br>chromatographic columns in the LIFE for Acid Whey project, we have already achieved excellent results in sequential separation of&nbsp; individual whey protein groups and high purity and the efficiency of lactoferrin extraction.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[At the end of November, the first results of the project were presented at the first monitoring visit]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>On 30 November 2017, we were pleased to present the results that we achieved in the first five months of the project. Besides several preparatory studies, we optimised the method of extraction of lactoferrin from acid whey and obtained the first samples of the product of high purity and activity.</p>]]></description>

                                <title><![CDATA[Participation at the 13th International Conference on Lactoferrin in Rome, November 5-10, 2017]]></title>
                                <description><![CDATA[<p>We attended the official International conference on lactoferrin in Rome.  The six days of lectures confirm the high relevance of the topic. The conference presented the latest findings in the field of characterisation and quality control of lactoferrin, new findings in the field of lactoferrin functions in the organism, its new ways of use for health protection and improvement and ways of its production.</p>]]></description>
